Maggot removal Melbourne

Maggots are never the problem. They are the arrow pointing at it.

Blowfly larvae only appear where something organic is decomposing. If they are dropping from a ceiling or appearing along a cornice, there is a carcass in the roof void directly above — that is not a guess, it is how the maggots got there. If they are in a bin, a drain or under a fridge, the source is food waste or spillage.

So we clear and sanitise the maggots, but the visit is really about finding and removing what produced them. Clearing larvae without removing the source just means another generation in a few days, and the smell arrives shortly afterwards.

Why maggot jobs are urgent in a way most pest jobs are not

Blowfly development is fast enough that a day genuinely changes the job. These are the numbers we work to.

Eggs hatch in under a day

In a Melbourne summer, blowfly eggs laid on a carcass hatch within eight to twenty-four hours. A single female lays in the hundreds. That is why a problem invisible on Friday is a serious one by Sunday, and why we treat these as same-day calls rather than booking them for next week.

They feed for three to five days, then leave

Larvae feed for roughly three to five days and then stop eating and migrate away to pupate. Once they migrate, the problem physically spreads through the building — which is the moment a contained job becomes a messy one.

Migration is why they are on your ceiling

Mature larvae travel several metres from the carcass to find somewhere dry to pupate. That is why they appear along a cornice, drop from a ceiling rose or turn up crawling down a wall a long way from the body. It also means the spot you found them is not the spot to open up — we trace it back.

A Melbourne roof void accelerates everything

A roof cavity in February can sit well above the outside temperature, and warmth roughly halves blowfly development time. The same carcass that would be a slow problem in July becomes an urgent one in summer, which is when most of these calls come in.

Do not pour boiling water into a cavity

It is the most common thing people try. It soaks insulation and plasterboard, it does not reach larvae inside a wall or under a floor, and it adds a damp problem to the one you already have. The same goes for flooding a roof void with insecticide.

Do not vacuum them into a bagless cleaner

Larvae survive it, pupate inside the canister and emerge as flies in the cupboard where you store it. If you must lift them yourself, use a bagged vacuum and put the bag straight in an outside bin, or scoop into a sealed bag.

Signs to look for

Where maggots turn up and what it means

The location is diagnostic.

Where you found them

  • Dropping from a ceiling or crawling along a cornice line
  • In the roof void insulation
  • In the wheelie bin or bin store
  • Under or behind a fridge or freezer
  • In carpet near a wall, with no food nearby
  • Around a drain or floor waste

What is underneath

  • A dead animal directly above that spot — call it as a dead animal job
  • A carcass in the roof, or a possum or bird latrine
  • Food residue in the bin base — the most common and easiest fix
  • Spilled food or a leak that has gone unnoticed
  • A carcass in the wall cavity behind that section of skirting
  • Organic build-up in the trap or a blockage
CeilingsLook directly above

Maggots migrate away from the carcass to pupate. Ones appearing on a ceiling or cornice put the body within about a metre of that spot, in the roof void.

SummerIt happens fast

In Melbourne summer heat, eggs hatch within a day and larvae develop in under a week. A problem that was invisible on Friday is severe by Tuesday.

SmellIt usually follows

If there are maggots and no smell yet, the smell is coming. Acting now is much less unpleasant than acting in a week.

What is underneath

Maggots are the arrow, not the problem

Blowfly larvae only appear where something organic is decomposing. Where you found them tells us what is underneath, and that is what actually has to be removed.

What actually needs to happen

This is a short job done properly and a repeat job done badly.

Source

Clearing maggots without the source is pointless

Larvae are the visible stage of an ongoing cycle. If the carcass or waste producing them stays where it is, adult flies keep laying and you get another generation within days.

That is why our maggot visits include finding the source. Where it turns out to be a dead animal in a cavity, we quote it as a dead animal removal rather than charging you twice.

Sanitising

The residue is the health issue, not the larvae

Maggots themselves do not bite or transmit disease directly. The problem is what they are feeding in and the bacterial load they carry across floors, benches and carpet as they migrate.

So the area is sanitised rather than just cleared, and soiled insulation or carpet underlay is removed where it cannot be salvaged.

How it works

How a maggot job runs

Usually a single visit.

1

Locate the source

We work out what is decomposing and where — most often a carcass in a roof void or wall cavity, or waste in a bin, drain or appliance.

2

Clear

Larvae are removed physically rather than left to pupate in the building.

3

Remove the source

The carcass or waste is removed and disposed of properly. Soiled insulation is taken out where needed.

4

Sanitise and treat

The area is sanitised and deodorised, and adult flies are treated so the cycle does not simply restart.

Free re-treatment inside the warranty period

If the pest comes back inside the warranty period on a treated property, we return and re-treat at no charge. The warranty follows the treatment, not the visit — an inspection on its own cannot be warranted, and we would rather say that plainly than sell you a guarantee that quietly excludes you.

Why it matters

Why this needs same-day attention

Maggot problems get worse by the hour in summer.

It multiplies

A single blowfly lays hundreds of eggs, and in summer heat they hatch within a day.

They migrate

Mature larvae leave the source to pupate, which is how they end up in living areas metres from where they started.

Bacteria

Larvae carry bacterial load from decomposing material across floors, carpet and benches as they move.

The smell follows

Maggots almost always precede the full decomposition smell. Acting now avoids the worse week.

How much does maggot removal cost in Melbourne?

Clearing and sanitising an accessible outbreak starts from $149, a roof void or cavity job including locating the carcass from $290, and heavy contamination with insulation removal from $390. You get the figure in writing before we start.

Maggots are falling from my ceiling. What does that mean?

There is a carcass in the roof void more or less directly above that spot. Mature larvae migrate away from the body to pupate, which is how they come through the cornice line. It is a dead animal removal job and we will treat it as one.

Can you come today?

Yes — same-day across metropolitan Melbourne, and we answer the phone 24 hours. Maggot jobs escalate quickly in summer, so we prioritise them.

Are maggots dangerous?

Not directly — they do not bite or sting. The health issue is the bacterial load they carry from decomposing material across floors, carpet and benches as they migrate, which is why we sanitise rather than just clear.

How did they get in the bin?

A blowfly laid eggs on food residue, usually meat or pet food, and in warm weather they hatched within a day. Rinsing the bin, keeping the lid closed and bagging meat waste prevents almost all bin maggot problems.

Will the smell come too?

If the source is a carcass, yes — maggots usually appear before the full decomposition smell does. Dealing with it now is considerably less unpleasant than waiting.

Do you remove the source as well?

Yes. Clearing larvae without removing what is producing them just gets you another generation within days. Where the source is a carcass in a cavity we quote it as a dead animal removal rather than charging for two jobs.

What can I do before you arrive?

Keep pets and children out of the area, do not vacuum them up into a bagless vacuum you intend to keep using, and if they are in a bin, close the lid and move it away from the house. Do not tip boiling water into a roof void or wall cavity.

Maggots and you cannot find the source?

We answer 24 hours a day and we can usually be there the same day.
